Deskunking Quick Guide

  1. If you know where the skunk spray hit, blot the area with a paper towel to try to absorb as much as you can.
  2.  Start with mint: Soak some paper towel in generic mint mouthwash and dab it lightly wherever you think the skunk oil is. You don't want to wet the hair very much and stay away from the skin completely. Sniff, dab, and remember where the skunk is. When you can't smell any more skunk (because the mint is hiding it all), then you've probably located all the oil. Remember where your mint spots are because that's where you want to focus on deskunking.
  3. Prepare the deskunking recipe: Put a handful of baking soda in a bucket, add a squirt of Dawn, and then drizzle in just enough vinegar (better if you don't want to bleach your dark-colored dog) or peroxide (generally more effective) to make a thick paste.
  4. Scoop some of the paste up with a paper towel and smear it all over the skunk-sprayed areas. Dogs almost always get hit in the face so be extremely careful not to get any deskunking paste in their eyes! (If they got skunked in the eye, you may need to flush their eyes with water or saline, but that's basically a medical intervention, so consult your vet there)
  5. Let it sit for a few minutes while you sniff around, searching for more of the skunk smell. Skunk smell is tricky (when it's really strong, you feel it in your gut more than register it as a smell). It's important to be thorough at this stage because once you get the dog wet, it's game over, you'll be living with whatever oil you missed for the next six months (a ghost of it, whenever the dog gets wet).
  6. Check again: before you add water, make sure you've blotted and baking-powder-pasted every fine, misty droplet of that oil.
  7. Bathe with your favorite shampoo.
